Learn to Make Natural Holiday Wreaths

This pine bough wreath was made by a first-time participant in one of Janet Smith’s wreath making classes.

It's easy to put a personal
touch on your holiday decor

... by making your own wreaths using natural pine, dried flowers, berries and other natural elements. With instruction from Janet Smith at Still Meadows Farm, you will go from beginner to completing your own wreath masterpiece within a 2 hour class.

"I love the soft look of natural wreaths," said Janet. "Participants will learn the best greenery and dried materials to use, how to assemble their wreath, and will be amazed at how long it lasts! I usually discard mine away around the end of March and it still looks good."

Janet has been teaching others how to make their own natural wreaths for the past 4 years. Cost for the class is $35 and includes all the materials needed. Similar classes in the Charleston WV area range from $60 to $100. "I try to limit the classes to about 8 people per session, so I can give a lot of attention to each participant," Janet said. "I offer several sessions so everyone who wants to make a wreath can do so."

2011 Wreath Class Schedule:
Friday, Nov. 18th at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 19th at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 20th at 1:30 p.m.

Janet and her friends spend their summers looking for interesting plants to dry for use in the wreaths. "Many of the plants and flowers we use would be difficult to find commercially, especially if you do not have access to land. People really can't go somewhere and purchase the types of materials we supply," she explained.

The botanicals include all types of pines, holly and shrub cuttings, which form a foundation for the wreaths. An assortment of flowers and berries are used for color.

Janet says, "I love teaching the classes. Everyone's wreath looks wonderful and shows a personal style. Our participants are very proud of what they have made!"

Herbal Recipes for the Holidays

Fresh from Janet Smith’s kitchen, Still Meadows Farms is sharing its Herbal Recipe Collection. “Cooking with fresh herbs from my garden adds fragrance and flavor to everything I cook,” explains Mrs. Smith. “I want to share some of my favorite recipes with our friends.” New recipes will be added to the website regularly and shared with our subscribers. “These two recipes are my favorites to share with holiday guests in our home,” said Mrs. Smith.
